What is the Humanities Education Development Unit (EDU)?

The Humanities Education Development Unit (EDU) was established in 2012 and its central function is to run the Humanities extended degrees.

What does the Humanities Education Development Unit (EDU) do?

The EDU is involved in a number of initiatives to enhance the experience of undergraduate students in the Faculty. The EDU aims to ensure that students have access to both psychosocial and academic support throughout their undergraduate careers. Some of these initiatives are:

• Student Mentorship

  Senior students volunteer to act as Mentors to first-year students, help them adjust to university life (academic and social). Mentors can refer students to relevant campus offices should academic or psychosocial problems arise.

• Augmented Courses (Plus Tutorials)

  Additional tutorials and consultations offered alongside regular lectures to support  students with their academic studies during their first year.

• Tutor Training

  This programme takes place twice a year, at the start of each semester when new tutors are employed by Departments to facilitate undergraduate course tutorials. The goals for these workshops are, broadly, to:

  • Acknowledge the important role of tutors in teaching and learning in the Humanities Faculty;
  • Work with new tutors to develop their skills in facilitating student learning in tutorial groups; and
  • Develop awareness of the knowledge and skills needed for assessment of undergraduate students.

• Writing Consultations

  Writing Consultations are offered in response to students and staff requests regarding the need for this service internally to the HUM EDU. The main objective of the HUM EDU writing consultation services is to provide a service that complements the formal courses ED students undertake by introducing to them and/or reinforcing the skills needed for critical writing, while at the same time supporting them by not increasing their workload.

Extended Degree programmes

An applicant who does not meet the minimum stipulated criteria for the Faculty General Degrees, but who demonstrates potential, may be eligible for consideration on the Extended Degree programme. In the Faculty of Humanities, the Extended Degree takes the form of a Bachelor of Arts [BA] or Bachelor of Social Science [BSocSc] degree taken over four years (as opposed to three years).
