Coastal Brass Collective Lunch Hour
The Coastal Brass Collective was founded in 2022 in preparation for the Stellenbosch University National Ensemble Competition (SUNEC). The group was named after the various coastal areas of the Western Cape that the founding members represent and consists of five core playing members and a non-playing manager:
- Christin Rohl (1st Trumpet)
- Chad Groepies (2nd Trumpet)
- Shannon Thebus (French horn)
- Andrea Balocco (Trombone, Manager)
- Craig Nicholas (Tuba, Manager)
- Frances Levenderis (Manager)
The group plays primarily as a brass quintet, but can also play in duos and trios. When a core member is unavailable or additional players are needed, members from the South African brass community are included on an as-needed basis.
The Coastal Brass Collective presents a concert of the Versatility of the Brass Quintet, which will bridge the barrier between audience and performers established in classical music.
The audience is invited to interact with the performers and ask questions. In this was the audience not only watches a concert, but they are invited to fully immerse themselves and knowledge is shared between performer and listener. The concert aims to truly show the audience what brass instruments are capable of, and the wide variety of genres and styles that can be played by a brass ensemble.
