The Live Art Festival was established in 2012 as a biennial event, alternating with Infecting the City (curated by Prof. Jay Pather until 2024). It is one of the longest running live art festivals in the country and provides a unique opportunity for local and international artists to push boundaries beyond traditional mediums and disciplines. The festival is a multi-site event with itinerant performances that keep a dynamic roving audience across the city. Artists are encouraged to think “outside of the box” and in response to specific sites, histories and socio-economic conditions. The festival places emphasis on interaction, intervention and experimentation, featuring creative works in performance art, music, dance, literature, fine art and film. In all the iterations of the Live Art Festival, there are panel discussions, public screenings and outdoor lectures in the symposium component which brings researchers and artists together to ensure that the art that is shown at the festival is researched – giving durational artworks longevity. This also enables us to build rich archives of the live art practice.
