Omelga Mthiyane
Omelga Mthiyane is an award-winning filmmaker. Her first film, Ikhaya premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. Other films directed and produced by Omelga Mthiyane are, ‘Different Pigment’, ‘Ikhaya Malawi’, ‘Inanda, My Heritage’. She co-directed ‘Baraka’ , documenting the xenophobic attacks of 2008. Baraka premiered in the Berlinale and broadcast on BBC World. In 2020 she directed ‘Lefu’ which was awarded the DFA Covid-19 Short Film Grant, received 3 SAFTA nominations and won best short at the Jozi Film Festival. Omelga is currently an Adjunct Lecturer at The Graduate School of Business Leadership at Unisa and studying towards a Masters in Fine Arts at Afda. Her community was directly impacted by the recent floods in Kwazulu Natal and Omelga is developing a documentary that takes a deeply personal look at the impact of the climate crisis.
