Biografias de Mulheres Africanas online home
The website Biografias de Mulheres Africanas (Biographies of African Women) - ufrgs.br/africanas is available. This is an initiative with didactic-pedagogical purposes, through which essential data on the life of 552 women born on the African continent and in the diaspora, from the origins of humanity to the present time, are informed. The intention is to offer subsidies for teaching and research on the history of African women in Portuguese.
The page is the result of a scientific initiation project of the same name developed by undergraduate and graduate students of UFRGS, under the coordination of Professor José Rivair Macedo and the now Master Thuila Farias Ferreira, in the period 2018-2020. The inspiration for the work arose from the scarcity of reference material in Portuguese about African personalities, especially female ones. In the research for the construction of the biographies, the members consulted the Dictionary of African Biography coordinated by Emmanuel K. Akyeampong and Henry Louis Gates Jr (Oxford, 2012), and also other specialized dictionaries, as well as electronic sites, academic articles, books, and Wikipedia.
Mini-biographies can be accessed from an alphabetical index, or through several thematic sections created from the identification of geographic location or historical location, and according to the situation, condition, or public performance of women. This allows a certain uniformity of groups, profiles and distinctive traits of the female characters presented, offering possibilities of perception of the heterogeneity and diversity of the history of women from all parts of the continent.
Biografias de Mulheres Africanas (Biographies of African Women) is due to a partnership between the Multidisciplinary Network of African Studies of the Latin American Institute of Advanced Studies (ILEA-UFRGS) of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) and the Department of Education and Social Development (DEDS-UFRGS) of the Pro-Dean of Extension of UFRGS. It also has the support of the Nucleus of Afro-Brazilian, Indigenous and African Studies (NEAB-UFRGS).
