The Department of Social Work and Social Development at University of Cape Town offers a 2-year MSocSc in Criminal Justice Social (CJSW) Degree with sub-specialism in either Forensic Social Work or, Probation Practice or Correctional Social Work. Our programme is aimed at enabling students to develop evidence-based approaches to practice in line with international standards which require them to function effectively in a range of CJSW settings that focus on probation practice or/and correctional practice or/and forensic social work practice.

The Master of Social Science in CJSW programme has five courses, namely: Forensic Social Work, Probation Practice, Contemporary issues in Criminal Justice Social Work, a Mini dissertation (students choose their own research topic, and a supervised internship programme in a setting related to one of the three aforementioned fields of sub-specialism in the CJSW

The structure of our Postgraduate Degree allows students to receive theoretical grounding in the three afore-mentioned sub-specialisms theory courses within CJSW broadly in Year 1 of the programme. In the 2nd year the student receives advanced knowledge and practice in one of the three above- mentioned specialisms in both their Internship Placement & in their Research Dissertation on a topic of their choice which must fall within their chosen sub- specialism in CJSW.
