Course outline:
This course critically examines various theories of embodiment and aesthetics and relates them to questions of ethics, the human body, and religious experiences and traditions. The course initials an exploration into how the material culture of religion and its associated sensational experiences condition the human body and the cultivation of social norms and virtue ethics. Through close analysis of both religious primary texts and ethnographic case studies from different religious cultures, including Islam and African traditions, this course provides a comparative insight into the values and meanings of embodiment and ethics and aims to unpack and better understand the complexity of the world we live in.
