The Postgraduate Diploma in Library and Information Studies (PGDipLIS) is a first level qualification for those intending to pursue a professional career of work with information. It aims to produce library and information specialists capable of performing a range of tasks required of a quality information service in a range of professional settings while reflecting the rapidly changing nature of the LIS discipline and the complex interplay of information provision and information technology which has become characteristic of libraries and information services.

The minimum admission requirement for the PGDipLIS is a bachelor’s degree. It is a highly concentrated programme for graduates wishing to follow their first degree with a professional LIS qualification. It may be taken on a full-time or block release basis (which allow for completion in one year), or on a part-time basis (over two years).

The programme is made up of five compulsory courses of equal weight (24 credits each). They are:

•    LIS4050W Research Methods and User Studies
•    LIS4051W Information Resources
•    LIS4052W Resource Planning & Use
•    LIS4053W Resource Description & Communication
•    LIS4054W Knowledge Organisation & Management

Please consult the Faculty of Humanities Postgraduate Studies handbook (available from the website of the University of Cape Town) for further information about each course.

On the successful completion of the PGDipLIS, the development path is to apply for a professional post in a library, resource centre or information service, thus acquiring experience. In terms of further study, the PGDipLIS qualifies the graduate for an LIS master’s programme.
