Admission requirements
The faculty requirements as set out in the Faculty of Humanities Handbook apply. Specific entry requirements are a Bachelor’s degree with a major in a cognate field. Preference will be given to those with appropriate work experience in the social development field. Admission is by selection. Acceptance is on the recommendation of the coordinator of the stream and the Head of Department.
Programme Structure
The one-year programme consists of five compulsory modules – four taught modules and a practice research project:
- Social Research
- Social Development: Theory and Applied Approaches
- Development Planning
- Introduction to Social and Economic Development
- Practice Research Project

MASTERS PROGRAMME
Admission requirements
The faculty requirements as set out in the Faculty of Humanities Handbook apply. The specific additional entry requirement for this programme is a UCT BSocSc (Hons) Social Development degree or equivalent within the cognate fields of Social Development. Admission is by selection. Acceptance is on the recommendation of the coordinator of the stream and the Head of Department.
Programme Structure
The one-year full time programme consists of five compulsory taught course modules, an internship, and a dissertation. It is possible to extend the programme over 18 – 24 months.
