Professor Chandra Mohanty will be in conversation with a panel of South African feminist practitioners and academics as part of the African Gender Institute’s 2014 Talking the Walk Programme.

Chandra Mohanty is professor of Women’s and Gender Studies, Sociology, and the Cultural Foundations of Education & Dean’s Professor of the Humanities at Syracuse University. She claimed the spotlight in 1984 with the publication of her essay “Under Western Eyes: Feminist Scholarship and Colonial Discourses”. Her scholarship and teaching focus on, inter alia, the politics of difference and solidarity, decolonizing knowledge and theorizing agency, identity and resistance in the context of feminist trans-border solidarity.

Professor Mohanty will be joined in discussion by:

Yaliwe Clarke: Lecturer in Gender Studies at the University of Cape Town. Her research interests are around feminist perspectives on notions of peace, conflict and security in African contexts.

Amanda Gouws: Professor of Political Science at Stellenbosch University. Her fields of specialisation are South African Politics and Gender Politics and Political Behavior.

Desiree Lewis: Professor at the University of the Western Cape. Her research interests are literary and popular culture, global feminist knowledges and politics, the politics of visuality and representation and postcolonial writing and culture.

Marion Stevens: Research Associate at the African Gender Institute as well as the coordinator of WISH Associates (Women in Sexual and Reproductive Rights and Health), a network of nine South African consultant activists.
