The Young Feminist Leaders programme aims to create community among the students of UCT, offering them a space to lead their own feminist discourses and journeys. Each term, these students plan and execute community engagement projects, for them to create relationships and feminist practices beyond the classroom.

Onthou vi Fredo?

Onthou vi Fredo? is a powerful and intimate portrayal of the life and legacy of local Queer Icon and Drag Queen, Alfredo (“Tannie, Anuschka De Patre”) Lorenzo April. This moving documentary asks the critical question: “Do you remember Alfredo?” The film explores memory as a catalyst for social justice, touching on themes of solidarity, ally-ship, and remembrance. Through this film Fredo’s story is brough to life with raw honesty and love and ensures that his tragic murder and enduring impact on the community of Malmesbury are never forgotten.

This film was made by Cleveland Hopp (writer and director), Mpho Modisakeng (Cinematographer and Editor) and Quaanita Triegaardt (Producer and Sound Recordist) as their dissertation for the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) specialising in Film Theory and Practice.

There will be a Q&A session with the writer and director Cleveland Hopp.

Poetry

Bubbles by Sobaagh Zoutenberg

Bubbles trailing out of my mouth

Reaching towards the surface

I’m drowning in the lake

And the silence is loud

I’m opening eyes to

Smeared colours through the

Sting in my eyes

Like tears swallowed

Tails and scales swim over my head

as I approach the sand

At the bottom of the

reclaimed land.

Someone told me that the Cape Flats

Would be swallowed by

Water nymphs that were

Waiting to reclaim their land

When I think of the Cape Flats

I think of the last time i saw my great aunt

They carried her out of her door

Covered in wood,

lulled by mournful arabic cries

footsteps over loose brown sand

In her house in the Cape Flats

Theres a lone fish swimming aimlessly

Tiny bubbles reaching for the top of the tank

A pink and purple castle nestled in brightly coloured pebbles

When the water comes knocking

Peeking through curtains

Nudging at windows

Will that fish finally move out of its glass walls

And swim through the room its seen its whole life

The lone inhabitant of a water logged family home
