The Environmental Humanities South (EHS) is excited to celebrate with Dr Nteboheng Phakisi on her doctoral graduation.

Congratulations to Dr Phakisi, who was amongst the 100 doctoral graduates who, as part of the July 2023 graduation season, walked the stage of the University of Cape Town's Sarah Baartman Hall, capped; following a successful completion of their studies. In her doctoral research, Dr Phakisi investigated the politics of seeds, soil, and pesticide use amongst small scale farmers in the Eastern Cape province, South Africa. Her research is titled as follows:"The Impact of Induatrial Agrarian Policies on Soils: The Experiences of Small-Scale Farmers in the Rural Eastern Cape".

The value of Dr Phakisi's work, which she brilliantly carried out under the supervision of Professor Lesley Green, is embodied by transdisciplinarity; adding to the ongoing efforts to consider the complex web of relations between people, the material flows, and the life of planet Earth within the context of South Africa. Most importantly, Dr Phakisi theoretically draws from the critical philosophies foregrounded by Aime Cesaire and Steve Bantu Biko amongst others. We are proud to have been part of this monumental occasion, that also saw Dr Phakisi accompanied by her family who travelled all the way from the Mountain Kingdom of Lesotho. Mahlatse le mahlohonolo, Dr Phakisi. Pele, eya pele!
