Meet Dr Cecilia Ojemaye, a trained chemist bringing the attention to contamination of water bodies

The University of Cape Town recently announced six post-doctoral research fellows, as part of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which also align with the advancement of the African Union's Agenda 2063. Amongst these is Dr Cecilia Ojemaye from Nigeria, whose research focusses the attention on the contamination of water bodies. Dr Ojemaye's work fits in line with SDG goal 3: good health and wellbeing. As well as goal 6: clean water and sanitation for all.

Trained at the University of the Western Cape for her PhD, Dr. Ojemaye's research has brought attention to the contamination of marine life in the Western Cape province, South Africa. As a chemist, Dr Ojemaye's practice, for the Environmental Humanities South (EHS) where she is based, embodies shifts in methodologies of conducting transdisciplinary research that cuts across the natural sciences, humanities, and social sciences. At EHS, Dr Ojemaye as a post-doctoral research fellow, forms part of a growing team of researchers whose work and scholarly practice cuts across disciplines.

To date, Dr Ojeymaye's work has demonstrated how, amongst others, contamination of water puts people and the environment at risk. This work is especially critical as Africa and the rest of the world grapples with the effects of climate change. And how to implement environmental governance that takes all forms of being into consideration: people, plant life, and marine life.
