Brief Biography:
Benathi Phalezweni is an emerging scholar in the field of social development, having completed her undergraduate double major in Politics and Social Development at the University of Cape Town (UCT). She continued her academic journey at UCT, earning an Honours degree in Social Development, and is currently pursuing her Master's degree in the same field.

During her postgraduate years, Benathi served as a tutor and for a short while as a lecturer in the Social Development Department at UCT. Recently, Benathi began a role as an Advocacy and Lobbying Consultant at NOAH, where she applies her academic insights to real-world challenges, particularly in advocating for marginalized communities.
 
With her research titled "From Boys to Men: Exploring Masculinity Ideologies About South African Women," Benathi's interests lie in examining the discourse surrounding Black people, specifically focusing on the Xhosa community. She investigates how culture and tradition are often problematized as sites of violence and dysfunction, particularly concerning masculine identity. Through her research, Benathi seeks to offer insights into the intersectionality of cultural practices and broader social issues, aiming to foster a deeper understanding that transcends simplistic characterizations of culture as the sole source of violence against women. This narrative reflects her commitment to scholarship and social justice, driving her work as an advocate and researcher.

Benathi is under the supervision of Amanda Manqoyi-Ouamba, a renowned expert in the field of social development. Amanda's guidance has been instrumental in shaping Benathi's research trajectory, providing invaluable insights and perspectives. Through regular meetings and constructive feedback, Amanda has encouraged Benathi to explore innovative research methodologies and to critically engage with scholarly literature. Moreover, Amanda's mentorship extends beyond academia, as she actively supports Benathi's professional development and encourages her to participate in relevant conferences and networking opportunities. Benathi greatly appreciates Amanda's mentorship, as it has not only enriched her academic journey but also instilled in her a deeper sense of confidence and purpose as a researcher.
