The Schock Foundation was established by the late Judge Philip Schock to assist and support charities and educational institutions in South Africa.

The family's love of the arts lead to the inaugural Schock Foundation Singing Competition for outstanding UCT students in 2002.

PRELIMINARY ROUND: Tuesday 14 October 2025, Baxter Concert Hall, from 10am onwards

FINAL ROUND: Tuesday 28 October 2025, Baxter Concert Hall, 7pm

The 24th annual voice competition sponsored by the Schock Foundation. The competition is open to full-time students of the SACM.

Students compete for prizes in the following categories:

  • Best Opera Aria,
  • Best Oratorio Aria,
  • Best South African Song,
  • Best Art Song,
  • and there is an Audience Prize!
The competition is adjudicated by a panel of widely recognised and experienced professional musicians.

Entrance requirements 

The South African College of Music hereby invites applications for the 24th classical voice competition to award prize money from the Schock Foundation. This competition is open to any full-time classical voice students at the SACM who:

are at least in their second year of study

are in good academic standing

Required Repertoire

Preliminary Round: You must prepare one opera aria, one oratorio aria, one art song from any country and in the original language, and one South African song. At the audition, you will select the first piece you wish to sing. The adjudicating panel will then choose whether to hear a second or a third piece. 

Final Round: You will perform all four pieces in this round.

  • Your vocal teacher needs to approve your repertoire selection.
  • All music must be memorised for both rounds. 
  • Your programme should be performed in the order listed on this entry form.
  • Any programme changes MUST be communicated to the co-ordinator (fiona.grayer@uct.ac.za) at least 2 weeks before the competition starts.
