Cape Town, South Africa — The UCT Strings Competition, hosted by the South African College of Music at the University of Cape Town, returns in 2026 with an expanded national footprint. First launched in 2022, the event is now open to string players from across South Africa under the age of 28 (at the time of the finals), strengthening its position as a key platform in the country’s classical music landscape.

Taking place from 7–11 September 2026, the competition will feature both junior and senior categories, continuing its commitment to supporting musicians at different stages of their development. The initiative seeks to identify, nurture and showcase exceptional string talent from around the country.

Hosted by the University of Cape Town, the competition benefits from strong institutional support, including access to world-class venues and administrative infrastructure. This foundation ensures both high organisational standards and long-term sustainability.

Following the strong response to previous editions, a national high school category was introduced in 2024. The 2026 expansion marks a significant milestone, broadening access and creating a more inclusive platform for young musicians nationwide. The event has also attracted international attention, with coverage in The Violin Channel (2023) and The Strad News (2024).

A panel of distinguished musicians and educators will adjudicate the competition. A total of R135 000 in prize money will be awarded. Senior prizes include R40 000 for the winner, R20 000 for runners-up, R10 000 for the highest-ranked semi-finalist not advancing to the finals, and R5 000 for the best performance of a South African work. Junior prizes include R15 000 for the winner, R10 000 for runners-up, and R5 000 for the best performance of a South African work.

Finalists in both categories will perform at a public concert at the Baxter Concert Hall on Friday, 11 September 2026 at 18:00. Three junior finalists will present 20-minute programmes, while three senior finalists will perform 30-minute recitals. Tickets will be available via Webtickets.

In a landscape with few dedicated platforms for string players, the UCT Strings Competition provides an opportunity for focused artistic development. Participants benefit from professional feedback and high-level performance experience, positioning the event as a valuable springboard for emerging talent.

Entries for the 2026 competition are now open, with a closing date of 15 June 2026. Full details, entry requirements, and application forms are available at:
