Marga Smith

Secondary Piano, Accompanist

Marga Smith graduated from Stellenbosch University with a BMus in 2006, specializing in piano and flute under Luis Magalhães and Corvin Matei. She obtained a BMusHons and MMus in 2012, majoring in flute chamber music. After several years of full-time teaching and working as Head of Music at Sans Souci Girls’ High School, she furthered her studies with François du Toit at the University of Cape Town, specializing in piano accompaniment, and completing a Postgraduate Performance Diploma (PgDip) in 2021.

Marga holds an LTCL (Flute) from Trinity College and a PGCE from UNISA, and presented a paper on Afrikaans spiritual folk songs, known as “Liederwysies”, at the 43rd International Ballad Conference Kommission für Volksdichtung in 2013. She has been a marker for practical and written examinations for the Department of Education for several years and has worked as a freelance editor of music textbooks for Cambridge University Press since 2020. Marga teaches part-time at the South African College of Music and Rustenburg Girls’ High School and performs regularly as accompanist.
