Patrick Tikolo, baritone, is a native of South Africa. He grew up in Zwelitsha near East London in the Eastern Cape. Having been brought up in a musically inclined family, he became very active in a church choir for whom he later became the conductor. He is also a composer, arranger and a translator. Some of his works were heard during some of South Africa’s choral events such as the nationally televised performances of the Caltex Massed Choir Festival between 1995/8. In 1995/6, he was commissioned by Prof. Angelo Gobbato to translate Menotti’s Amahl & The Night Visitors and Mozarts Bastien und Bastienne into Xhosa. He coached and conducted several school and local choirs in his hometown as well as in Cape Town where he later worked as a music teacher and choral director of the Simon Estes High School and Cape Technikon. After auditioning for Cape Town Opera in 1995, he was chosen to become part of its choral training program, an experience which gave him an opportunity to study music at the University of Cape Town the following year. Immediately following completion of a Performer’s Diploma in Music in 2000, he was recruited by Barbara Hill-Moore, a Voice Professor of the Meadows School of The Arts at Southern Methodist University in Dallas to further his studies there. Patrick received his Graduate Artist Certificate in 2002 and his Master of Music degree in 2004. While at SMU, he served as a Teaching Assistant in the voice department. Some of his achievements include an Opera Award, Artistic Scholarship, The Schollmaier Foundation Scholarship, The David Crowley Memorial Scholarship, and The Bruce Foote Foundation Scholarship. He has sung in young artist programs in Italy, the U.K and the U.S.A. His repertory extends from opera to ora torio while he is no stranger to German, Russian, French and Italian songs. His operatic roles include title roles in Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro, Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi, Gershwin’s Porgy & Bess, and the role of Papageno in Mozart’sThe Magic Flute. Oratorio solos include Handel’s Messiah, Haydn’s Creation, Mozart’s Mass in C Minor, Vesperae Solenness, The Coronation Mass, Requiem, the Requiem by Fauré, Bach’s St. Matthew Passion and St. John’s Passion, Mass in B Minor and Christmas Oratorio.
