Join us for a free guest lecture by Dr Taras Filenko, titled African and Ukrainian Musical Interconnections: The Legacy of Kwabena Nketia and Akin Euba. This engaging presentation explores the rich dialogue between African and Ukrainian musical traditions, highlighting the influential scholarship and creative contributions of Nketia and Euba within a global cultural context.
Dr Filenko is an ethnomusicologist, lecturer, and concert pianist widely recognised for his research into nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Ukrainian music history. A two-time Fulbright Scholar, he has presented lectures and developed courses across Europe and North America, focusing on the classical and folk musical cultures of Eastern Europe. Since 1998, he has served on the faculty of the City Music Center at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, where he also maintains a private piano studio.
