Thesis Title: Digital preservation preparedness of the National Library of Namibia for digital preservation of documentary heritage: a case study
Wilhelm Uutoni is a senior lecturer at the University of Namibia. He holds a BA in Library Science & Records Management obtained from the University of Namibia and a MSc in Library and Information Science obtained from the University of Borås in Sweden.
Wilhelm Uutoni’s thesis focuses on the National Library of Namibia’s preparedness to digitally preserve Namibia's documentary heritage. The research inquired into current preservation practices for information resources at the National Library of Namibia and went on to study the long-term preservation policies and strategies in place, or needed, to provide digital access to Namibia’s documentary heritage. The study found that the National Library of Namibia is currently not prepared to and capable of digitally preserving Namibian documentary heritage and that the Namibia library and information sector as a whole, did not have a digital preservation framework. Based on these findings and drawing from its theoretical framing, the study proposes a digital preservation framework for the National Library of Namibia and for the Namibia library and information sector. This framework is aimed at assisting the National Library of Namibia as well as the Namibia library and information sector to develop policies and guidelines to regulate the digital preservation of Namibia's documentary heritage for posterity.
