Fernanda Pinto de Almeida holds a PhD in History from the Centre for Humanities Research at the University of the Western Cape, where she held an NRF-DST Early Career Fellowship. Prior to that, she received an MA in Psychology from Stellenbosch University in South Africa and trained as a psychologist in Brazil, where she remains a registered clinician. She has written on photography and cinema and the formation of cultural publics in South Africa, focusing on the intersections of aesthetics, state planning and urban imaginaries. Her new research project approaches the technological mediation of cash transfers and asks specifically how Fintech reorients the relationship between wages, welfare and the state.
