Doctoral Research Fellow: The Humanities Academic Pipeline

Zakhele Shongwe is completing his PhD in the African Studies Department at the University of Cape Town. Zakhele's PhD project titled, "Race, Massacres and the Afterlives of Apartheid: A Case of Phoenix Massacre (12โ€“15 July 2021) in eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa" examines the extent to which structures of racism and the after-effects of apartheid may have potentially played producing the Phoenix massacre in Phoenix area of eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality in the KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa. He holds an MA in Development Studies and a BA in Social Work from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Zakhele tutored and taught part-time in the African Studies and Linguistics Department at the University of Cape Town. He was a research assistant at the Southern Africa Labour and Development Research Unit (SALDRU).
