Zakhele Shongwe
Zakhele Shongwe is completing his PhD in the African Studies Department at the University of Cape Town. Zakhele's PhD project titled, "Race, Massacres and the Afterlives of Apartheid: A Case of Phoenix Massacre (12โ15 July 2021) in eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa" examines the extent to which structures of racism and the after-effects of apartheid may have potentially played producing the Phoenix massacre in Phoenix area of eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality in the KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa. He holds an MA in Development Studies and a BA in Social Work from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Zakhele tutored and taught part-time in the African Studies and Linguistics Department at the University of Cape Town. He was a research assistant at the Southern Africa Labour and Development Research Unit (SALDRU).
