Ataya: HUMA Interdisciplinary Seminar Series
Speaker: Sandra Manuel, Universidade Eduardo Mondlane; Kaleidoscopio
Bio:Sandra Manuel is an anthropologist. Her career comprises a combination of teaching, academic and public policy research. Her area of specialisation is sexuality, gender and health. She belongs to various networks that question and challenge normative notions of feminine and masculine, examining the intersectionality of gendered relations and socio-cultural readings of the body and sexuality in Africa. She is currently a member of the editorial board of Anthropology Southern Africa
Topic: Analyses of the implementation of sexual education in Mozambican schools has highlighted several challenges significantly constraining performance. In 2019, the Ministry of Education banned the provision of adolescent-friendly contraceptive services at schools due to complaints from parents regarding its inappropriateness. In her article, Sandra Manuel explores avenues to understand the phenomena broadly. She argues that a clash of cosmologies between the formal education system and the local socio-cultural cosmologies is central to understanding the current scenario. Manuel aims to broaden the discussion on the relevance of more significant conversations amongst formal and local systems of sexual education in Mozambique.
How Ataya works: One presenter and their work – in exchange with the audience. Each Ataya session engages with selected work by the presenter (a text, artwork, performance, even food). The presenter introduces their work and grounds the subsequent discussion with the participants. For best engagement, we recommend participants to view the work (made available in advance on our website) before the session. More on the Ataya Series
