The 2024 Elections in Botswana
In October 2024, voters in Botswana rejected the Botswana Democratic Party that had governed the country since Independence in 1966. Through the Botswana Election Research Network, the Institute has been centrally involved in an unprecedented study of the elections.
A planning workshop was held prior to the elections. Two workshops were held after the elections, in April and September 2025, to discuss a set of papers that draw on both quantitative and qualitative data to examine aspects of the background to the elections, parties’ candidate selection and campaigns, and the factors influencing voter turnout and choice. The papers will be published in the 2025 volume of Botswana Notes and Records.
