School feeding programmes

The Institute – in partnership with Dr Tim Dorlach from the University of Bayreuth – hosted a mini-workshop in November on the politics of school feeding schemes. Despite the fact that many donors and international agencies favour social cash transfers, school feeding programmes have proliferated across Africa and now reach more than 80 million children. 

This field remains largely unstudied. The workshop discussed experiences in Nigeria (Tim Dorlach), Kenya (Maryanne Wamahiu), Botswana and South Africa (Jeremy Seekings), Malawi (Patience Masi) and Zambia (Hangala Siachiwena). It is hoped that this will lead to a collaborative research project.
