Prof Tim Murithi

Professor Tim Murithi is Head of the Peacebuilding Interventions Programme at the Institute for Justice and Reconciliation in Cape Town, and Extraordinary Professor of African Studies, at the Centre for African and Gender Studies, University of the Free State, in South Africa, as well as an He Honorary Research Associate, Institute for Democracy, Citizenship and Public Policy in Africa, University of Cape Town. He has over 25 years of experience in the fields of peace, security, international justice, governance and development. 

He is a Member of the Tana High-Level Forum on Security in Africa Technical Committee. He is an Advisory Board Member of: African Union Leadership Academy (AULA); Centre for Mediation, University of Pretoria; and Cape Town Holocaust and Genocide Centre. He was formerly a Research Fellow with the African Gender Institute, University of Cape Town. From 1995 to 1998, he taught at the Department for International Relations, Keele University, UK, where he also obtained his PhD in International Relations, in 1999.

He is on the international advisory boards of: Journal of Peacebuilding and Development, African Journal of Conflict Resolution (ACCORD), African Peace and Conflict Journal (UPEACE), Journal of African Union Studies, and Peacebuilding. He has written over 100 journal articles, book chapters and policy papers. He is author and editor of 11 books including: as author, The Ethics of Peacebuilding (Edinburgh University Press, 2009) and The African Union: Pan-Africanism, Peacebuilding and Development (Ashgate, 2005); Judicial Imperialism: The Politicization of International Criminal Tribunals in Africa (Jacana, 2019); as co-author, The African Peace and Security Architecture: A Handbook (FES, 2014); as editor, The African Union: Autocracy, Diplomacy and Peacebuilding (I.B. Tauris, 2018); Routledge Handbook of Africa’s International Relations (2014); The Politics of Transitional Justice in the Great Lakes Region of Africa (Jacana, 2016); Towards a Union Government of Africa: Challenges and Opportunities (ISS, 2008); and as co-editor, The African Union Peace and Security Council: An Appraisal (ISS, 2011), Zimbabwe in Transition: A View from Within (Jacana, 2011), and The African Union and its Institutions (Jacana, 2008). He is general editor of the Routledge/Europa Series on Perspectives in Transitional Justice.
