Dr Philipp Mathmann

Dr Philipp Mathmann is senior physician and deputy director in the Department of Phoniatrics and Pedaudiology at Münster University Hospital and an internationally active opera singer. He is specialized in phoniatrics and pediatric audiology and publishes in both fields. He is involved in research on newborn hearing screening and hearing screening for people with intellectual disability. Together with Katrin Neumann he contributes to the WHO program on Prevention of Deafness and Hearing Loss as WHO representative of the German Society of Phoniatrics and Pedaudiology. During his medical training at the University of Cologne and the Charité Berlin, he coordinated a music-medicine research collaboration at the Royal College of Music London. He was scholar of the German National Academic Foundation (Studienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes) and completed his dissertation with top marks in the field of vocal medicine (phoniatrics) after completing his studies. He received the EUHA Hearing Award of the Union of the European Phoniatricians for his scientific work in 2023, is WHO Advisor for Audiology in the World Hearing Forum, member of the Collegium Medicorum Theatri (CoMeT), founder and speaker of the "Next Generation" group within the German Society for Phoniatrics and Paediatric Audiology (DGPP) and member of the Voice Committee of the Union of the European Phoniatricians (UEP). 

In addition to his medical training, he trained as a professional concert and opera singer and has performed as a soloist in the last 2 years alone at the Staatsoper Berlin, the Konzerthaus Vienna, the Semperoper Dresden, in Bayreuth and at the Teatro Real in Madrid, as well as in concert halls in Cape Town, South Korea and Paris. He has been Honorary Associate Professor of Vocal Physiology at the South African College of Music at the University of Cape Town since 2023. Since 2020, he has been a lecturer in voice physiology for the opera classes at the Berlin University of the Arts and the Münster University of Music.
