Doctoral Research Fellow: The Humanities Academic Pipeline

Linda Makgabutlane is Mellon Turning The Tide Doctoral Research Fellow at HUMA, pursuing her PhD at the Centre for Theatre, Dance and Performance Studies at the University of Cape Town. Her thesis investigates how performance and gathering can be seen as counterforces to the post-colonial condition of black subjection. She examines how performances such as poetry, performance art, music, and dancing in the context of nightlife, contemporary forms of gathering can act as covert political action that can be seen to shape the social imaginary of people, influence their self-perception, and performance of selfhood. Linda holds a BA of Architectural Studies and an MA in Theatre and Performance from the University of Cape Town alongside a B.Tech in Drama from Tshwane University of Technology.
