AmaArchive

Engaging the indigenous knowledge of the past, present and future. Join us as we sample, remix and groove to the archives of Percival Kirby and Hugh Tracey through Afrohouse and Amapiano re-imaginings.

Presented by Vuyisani Mkwambi and Dion Malcolm Eaby-Lomas

In this presentation, we seek new ways to engage with the various archives of African musics. 'Ama-archive', then, is a reference to our use of both Percival Kirby's collection of instruments and Hugh Tracey's gramophone recordings, as well as the wide range of approaches which we will employ. We will present new beats inspired by and sampled from these archives and discuss how we put these together, in order to draw attention to the rich and marginalized histories and knowledges they represent. By reworking these into the more familiar sounds of Afrohouse and Amapiano, we aim to open these archives to a wider public.
