Prof Stewart Deas

Director 1937-1938

Professor Stewart Deas was a Scottish musician and academic educated at the University of Edinburgh, where he studied under the eminent musicologist Sir Donald Tovey. He also trained as a conductor under Felix Weingartner. After founding the Sheffield Chamber Orchestra within the University of Sheffield’s music department—where he served as principal conductor—Deas later became Professor of Music at Sheffield University. In 1937–1938 he was appointed Director of the College of Music at the University of Cape Town. Three years after his appointment at the South African College of Music (SACM), he returned to Edinburgh in 1938 to take up a position as a music critic.
