Timothy Hurn

Jazz Fundamentals, Jazz in Context

Timothy Hurn is a musicologist and educator whose research focuses on South African jazz, particularly the music of Chris McGregor and the Brotherhood of Breath. His work examines how South African jazz developed in exile during the apartheid era and considers the historical contexts that shaped these musical networks.

He lectures Jazz Fundamentals and Jazz in Context I at the South African College of Music, University of Cape Town, where he also tutors jazz theory. He is currently completing a Master of Music at UCT. His work engages with archival research, jazz historiography, and the documentation of South Africa’s jazz heritage.
