Joshua Nemaire

Electric Bass, Bass Guitar

Joshua Nemaire is a musician from Zimbabwe, aged 25. He finished studying for a Bachelor of Music degree in Jazz Studies at the University of Cape Town, South African College of Music in 2023, and graduated with distinction. His main instruments are the Double Bass and the Electric Bass, but he is also familiar with the piano, drums, marimbas and guitar.

Joshua started his musical journey when he was just 10 years old, learning how to play the drums in church and marimbas in school. At age 15, he picked up the electric bass and electric keyboard in church, through guidance from his good friend, Tinaye Chirema.

In 2019 Joshua took up the role of junior master as music department assistant to Mr Owen Chimuka, the music teacher at Ruzawi School in Marondera, Zimbabwe. This is where Joshua was introduced to Jazz and the Upright bass by Mr Chimuka, who is a brilliant piano player. At this time Joshua took up the Double Bass and got accepted to study Jazz at the South African College of Music in 2020. During his time there, he was a part of the UCT Big Band, UCT Symphony Orchestra and many different ensembles at the college.

Joshua has performed with many different artists from South Africa and around the world including Sean Jones, Gordon Vernick, Fredrik Kronkvist, Mandisi Dyantyis, Afrika Mkhize, Andrew Lilley, Andrew Ford, Sibusiso Mashiloane, Hilton Schilder, Bokani Dyer and many others. He has participated in a couple of festivals around Cape Town, South Africa and Southern Africa in the few years that Joshua has been in Cape Town, including The Joy of Jazz International Jazz Festival - Johannesburg, The Zim Jazz Festival - Bulawayo, The Namib Desert International Jazz Festival,  The International Marimba Festival - Joburg, The National Conductors Convention, The Youth in Music Excellence Festival, The Artscape Youth Jazz Festival, The Jazzathon Festival, The National Youth Jazz Festival - Makhanda, The Journey to Jazz Festival - Prince Albert, The Cape Town Big Band Festival and The Cape Town International Jazz Festival.

Joshua is influenced by a wide variety of styles and artists from Jazz, Hiphop, Classical music, Neo Soul, African contemporary music to many more. Some of his most inspiring artists include Jacob Collier, Richard Bona, Kendrick Lamar, J Cole, Robert Glasper, Christian McBride, Charlie Parker, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Jimmy Dludlu and Oliver Mtukudzi, just to mention a few.

Currently, Joshua educates on the following instruments, marimbas, electric bass, double bass, piano, drums and guitar at a couple of different institutions around Cape Town including the University of Cape Town, Reddam Atlantic Seaboard School, Kirstenhof Primary, and Edgemead High School, just to mention a few. This is whilst teaching privately across cape town and online anywhere around the world.
