FREIGHTED: a paper cabinet, book launch July

In July 2025, the traveling exhibition FREIGHTED: 500 years of rhinoceros collection and display by Fritha Langerman, opened at its final destination in Europe, the Vienna Museum of Natural History.  This exhibition, that chronicles the colonial passage of rhinoceros around the world, first opened in 2018 at the Iziko South African Museum and has been touring museums and zoos in Europe since. It will return to the Ditsong National Museum of Natural History, Pretoria, in January 2026 where it will be on permanent display.

The book was initially launched in Vienna, and includes contributions by leading national and international scholars. It traces a history of rhinoceros collection and display: from rock art, the voyages of Marco Polo, the colonial histories of Dürer’s rhino print, Clara the Dutch rhinoceros, the fate of these animals in zoos, to their impending extinction.
