The Center for Documentary Studies, founded in 1989 at Duke University, offers an interdisciplinary program of instruction, production, and presentation in the documentary arts—photography, film/video, narrative writing, audio, and other creative media. Much more than a traditional educational center, CDS encourages experiential learning in diverse environments outside the classroom, with an emphasis on the role of individual artistic expression in advancing broader societal goals. The CCA’s photography unit was visited by Duke’s Charlie Thompson, director of CDS, in June 2008, to share ideas and cement an already existing relationship. Karen Glynn, Duke Library’s archivist for photography and film, visited the CCA in 2008 and 2009 to work on the Underexposed project and help shape The Other Camera project. The CCA hosted student interns from the DukeEngage programme in 2009 and 2010. The interns also worked with SHAWCO to develop its archive and institutional memory.
