Curated by Dr Siona O’Connell, in partnership with the Visual Identities in Art and Design Research Centre (VIAD) and the Centre for Curating the Archive (CCA)

Responding to a series of recently revealed photographs of ANC members in exile (Zambia and Tanzania, 1989-90), the film reflects on the political ideals and promises of freedom that motivated the liberation struggle both in and outside of South Africa, and the relation of these to a current landscape of political crisis in which we, as ‘new South Africans’, find ourselves complicit. Dr Siona O’Connell is an associate of the CCA and Jade Nair, researcher at the CCA, as well as two interns from the Honours in Curatorship programme have been working on this project with O’Connell’s guidance.  The original exhibition of photographs (titled Promises and Lies: The ANC in exile) that this documentary draws from was curated by O’Connell, in 2016, during her time as director of the centre.

The opening of Promises and Lies – Fault Lines in the ANC will take place on the 4th of May where Mr Pravin Gordhan will deliver the opening address. This will be followed by an exhibition of photographs of the ANC in exile, also curated by O’Connell, which opens on the 11th May at the FADA Gallery, UJ Bunting Rd Campus.
