Applications open on 1 April 2026 and close on 29 May 2026 at 12:00 midday.

  1. APPLICATION FORM

     Complete and submit the CGC Application for admission to MA Clinical Psychology. Please complete the application using the internal application form.
    This must be completed and submitted by 12:00 midday on 29 May 2026. No late applications will be considered.

  2. TRANSCRIPTS AND CERTIFICATES

    Provide certified copies of your full academic transcript and honours certificate. You will need to submit these documents with your application (in point [1] above). 

    Please note: that all applicants must be in possession of an honours degree in psychology from a South African university (with a recommended minimum of 70%), or an equivalent qualification recognised by the University of Cape Town and the Professional Board of Psychology (e.g. B.Psych). If you are currently in Honours and applying with your undergraduate results, please note that an average of 70% for your undergraduate marks in Psychology (not other majors) is the minimum requirement.

    Students applying from outside of South Africa (neighbouring countries) should apply to the South African Qualifications Authority to have their degree evaluated. SAQA Level 8 is the minimum requirement for your application. Please visit the SAQA website for further information about the evaluation of foreign qualifications. You will need to submit these documents with your application (in point [1] above).

  3. PROGRESS REPORT (where applicable)

    Honours students wishing to apply must send in a progress report with the application.If your application is successful, you will be granted provisional acceptance, pending the release of your Honours results, which must meet the 70% average criterion. If your marks do not meet this criterion, your acceptance will be rescinded. The Honours degree must be completed by the end of 2026. 

  4. APPLICATION FEE

    The application administration fee is R150 for South Africans and R175 for international applicants. The CGC banking details are listed further down on this page. Please upload proof of payment with the application or we will have no record of the transaction. You will need to submit these documents with your application (in point [1] above). 

  5. REFEREE REPORTS

    Two referee reports must be submitted in support of your application. You will be asked to provide their names and contact details in your application form, but it is your responsibility to contact them and make  Your two referees will be required to include your UCT Student Number when they complete their reports for you.  If you are new to UCT, you will be given a student number once you have completed the UCT application (see point [6] below). Please send this web form link to your two chosen referees. Referee reports are due when internal applications close at 12:00 midday on 29 May 2026. It is your responsibility to ensure that your referees have submitted their reports by the deadline. No late referee reports will be accepted.

    Please note: referee reports that originate from email addresses other than those belonging to the referee will not be considered.

  6. GENERAL UCT ADMISSION

    Finally, the general UCT Admissions Application should also be completed. Admissions applications will open from 1 April 2026, to be submitted online by 12:00 midday on 29 May 2026 and a separate payment has to be done for this process.

INFORMATION ABOUT THE SELECTION PROCESS

Our selection process has three phases:

Phase 1: Application (detailed above)

(1 April – 29 May 2026)

Shortlisted applicants will be contacted by 17:00 on Friday 18 July 2026.  If you have not heard from us by then, you should accept that your application has been unsuccessful.

Phase 2: Individual interviews, role-play exercise, proposal submission

(20-27 July 2026)

Candidates invited to Phase 2 will be required to participate in a number of activities:

-    Two individual interviews of about 45 – 50 minutes in duration. You will be contacted separately by two staff members to set up an online interview with each of them. These interviewers are blind to each other’s reviews.
-    A role-play with a current student or staff member.
-    Writing and submitting a one-page concept note outlining your proposed research.

Phase 3: Panel interview

(28-31 July 2026)
Candidates shortlisted from Phase 2 will be invited to Phase 3, which is an online panel interview with several staff members. Successful candidates will be contacted by 3 August 2026.
