The annual SACM Jazz Festival, arranged by SACM Jazz staff, features performances by the UCT Big Band and guests, a jazz vocal showcase, a jazz composers' showcase and selected Jazz ensembles.
All evening concerts start at 7pm

Tuesday 19 September
SACM Jazz Vocal Showcase
An evening of vocal jazz with the SACM jazz singing students, curated by Nomfundo Xaluva-Dyantyis and Abigail Houghton, culminating in a performance by the UCT Jazz Choir, directed by Amy Campbell. Expect to hear a vocal feast of swing, bebop, ballads and bossa nova, with a sprinkling of funky grooves and South African jazz.
Wednesday 20 September
SACM Jazz in Concert
SACM Top Jazz ensembles, lecturers & alumni in concert. The top two student jazz ensembles led by Justin Bellairs and Shaun Johannes strut their stuff in the opening set. This will be followed by performances from SACM Jazz lecturers and alumni, who are some of Cape Town’s top performing jazz musicians. Jazz staff put their money where their mouth is and show how it’s done outside of the lecture room! Expect to hear the Jason Reolon organ trio featuring Buddy Wells. Abigail Houghton shares her beautiful compositions and joins a special reunion of vocal ensemble Mamavox with Amy Campbell, Nomfundo Xaluva-Dyantyis and Amanda Tiffin.

UCT Big Band Celebrates South African Jazz
SACM Jazz Composition Student Showcase directed by Murray Buitendag and Amanda Tiffin. SACM Jazz Arranging and Composition students showcase their works, which include pieces for string quartet and jazz rhythm section, and new works for big band.
Then the UCT Big Band marks Heritage month with a celebration of South African Jazz. Murray Buitendag directs the band, as part of his Masters’ research project. The concert will feature works from top South African jazz composers, including Mike Campbell, Darryl Andrews, Shannon Mowday, Marcus Wyatt, Themba Mkhize and more.
