UCT Big Band celebrates International Jazz Day

Celebrated in more than 190 countries on 30 April, International Jazz Day is a global movement established by the General Conference of UNESCO in 2011. Reaching over 2 billion people annually through performances, workshops and education programmes, radio and television broadcasts, and social media, it’s a cross-continental commemoration of the music’s powerful magic, and its unique ability to unite people.
While Abu Dhabi has been selected as this year’s global host city—in collaboration with UNESCO and the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz—the UCT Big Band will host its own, highly anticipated annual International Jazz Day celebration at the Baxter Theatre.
Under the dynamic direction of Justin Bellairs, a multi-award winning, world-touring saxophonist, composer, and band leader, the band will perform an eclectic selection of songs from South African jazz, to contemporary and swing. Additionally, award-winning vocalist and ensemble leader, Amy Campbell also has a trick or two up her sequinned sleeve, having revived the UCT Jazz Voices quintet, who will feature alongside the UCT Big Band for a special nod to the jazz vocal tradition of vocalese.
As the 14th iteration of this beautiful international initiative draws nearer, you are strongly encouraged to book your tickets for what promises to be an unforgettable evening.
“Jazz has always been about bringing people together, breaking barriers, and inspiring creativity across cultures. International Jazz Day reminds us that music has the power to transcend borders, foster dialogue, and spark joy and hope,” says Herbie Hancock, a pioneer and master of the music.
The concert takes place on Wednesday 30 April at 7pm in the Baxter Concert Hall. Tickets are available via Webtickets for R150 (full price), R100 (pensioners 60+), R50 (scholars) and UCT students are offered free entry subject to availability.
