Graduating PhD candidate presents at the International Association For Youth Mental Health conference in Canada
In March 2025, Stijn de Leeuw (PhD candidate) presented findings from the study, “The Impact of a Preventative Mental Health Programme on Resilience in South African Children,” at the International Association for Youth Mental Health Conference held in Vancouver, Canada. This research was conducted in partnership with the South African non-profit organisation Little Lions Child Coaching (Cape Town) and King’s College London, under the supervision of Professor Susan Malcolm-Smith. The study evaluated the effectiveness of a preventative mental health intervention designed for children aged 8 to 13 years living in under-resourced communities. The intervention, referred to as the Inner Lion Programme, aims to strengthen psychological resilience and social wellbeing by leveraging community-based delivery through trusted local role models. It is intentionally designed to be low-cost, scalable, and sustainable, making it well-suited for implementation in low-resource settings. Preliminary findings are highly encouraging, demonstrating a significant positive impact on children’s resilience, even among those experiencing high levels of adversity.
