The Department of Psychology warmly congratulates Professor Mark Solms on the publication of his latest book, The Only Cure.

In this new work, Solms brings together psychoanalysis, neuroscience and clinical insight to revisit some of the most enduring questions in mental health care. The Only Cure argues that psychoanalytic therapy, once dismissed as unscientific, is increasingly being recognised as one of the most effective forms of treatment for psychological suffering. Drawing on compelling case studies and developments in contemporary brain science, the book explores why psychoanalytic therapy works, where Sigmund Freud’s ideas have been supported by modern research, and where they may need revision.

At a time when psychiatric diagnoses continue to rise and many conventional treatments do not adequately meet patients’ needs, The Only Cure offers a timely and provocative contribution to debates about the future of mental health treatment. The book makes the case for a renewed scientific understanding of healing grounded in the complexity of unconscious emotional life.

Described by neuroscientist Karl J. Friston as “a scholarly masterpiece”, The Only Cure is another significant contribution from Professor Solms to the fields of psychology, psychoanalysis and neuroscience.

We congratulate Professor Solms on this important publication.
