New book published from HUMA’s Circuits of Consumption work
The new collection of essays, edited by HUMA’s Deborah Posel and Ilana van Wyk from the Institute’s Circuits of Consumption programme, has been published by Wits University Press. The 256 pages book entitled “Conspicuous Consumption in Africa” explores the various ways in which conspicuous consumption is foregrounded in various historical moments and contexts in Africa.
The essays build on Veblen, Mbembe, Guyer and Bayart’s works to critically reflect on the pleasures, stresses and challenges of consuming in its religious, generational, gendered and racialised aspects, revealing conspicuous consumption as a layered set of practices, textures and relations.
