Announcing new HUMA Fellows

HUMA is delighted to welcome Emily Mashonganyika and Solomon Uhunamure as Postdoctoral Research Fellows funded by Carnegie Corporation of New York on Africa AI Ethics. We are pleased to be hosting Juliana Maria Costa from USP - Universidade de São Paulo as a Visiting Doctoral Research Fellow.
Emily Mashonganyika completed a PhD in Sociology at the University of Cape Town. Her research explores the factors that shape women's everyday clothing choices as a means of expression and negotiation of different forms of humanity. She holds a BA of Technology Education degree from Chinhoyi University of Technology (CUT), an MA in Education from Midlands State University (MSU) in Zimbabwe, and Advanced Diplomas in Clothing and Textiles, as well as in Technology Education. Before joining UCT in 2020, she worked as a teacher in Zimbabwe.
Solomon Uhunamure holds a PhD in EnvironmentalSciences from the University of Venda, South Africa. His research focused on sustainable energy transitions and environmental governance in the context of developing economies. His current postdoctoral research examines the evolving nexus of sovereignty, artificial intelligence (AI), and electronic waste (e-waste), exploring how emerging technologies and environmental externalities are reshaping the traditional boundaries of state authority and global governance. He holds an Msc in Environmental Sciences and a BA in Environmental Sciences (Hons) from the University of Venda, South Africa and a Bsc (Hons) in Geography and Regional Planning from Delta State University, Nigeria.
Solomon was part of the University of Cape Town's SDG postdoctoral research fellows. His academic and professional journey has been rooted in the intersection of environmental sustainability, public policy, and technological development, particularly within African contexts. His interdisciplinary approach integrates insights from environmental studies, international relations, digital ethics, and development studies, contributing to debates on digital colonialism, environmental justice, and sustainable development.
Juliana Maria Costa researches the framework of complementary actions to racial inclusion policies underway in Brazil and South Africa. She is a public administrator with an MBA from the University of São Paulo in Public Management and Research with a focus on racial and gender equity in scientific careers. She is a member of the TOTH-CRIARCOMC Group, dedicated to studies on Creativity, Innovation, Communication and Marketing, where she contributes to research on University Cities (MIL) - Media and Information Literacy.
