Better but not good enough? How Africans see the delivery of public services

Africans see more improvement than decline in their governments’ delivery of basic public services, according to new Afrobarometer survey findings from across the continent. In a new Afrobarometer Dispatch (no. 290), Michael Bratton, Jeremy Seekings and Daniel
Armah-Attoh examine data from more than 45,000 respondents in the 34 countries covered in round 7 of Afrobarometer. They show that the payment of bribes to the police remains worryingly widespread. South Africa sits on the mean for the continent, with one in four people reporting contact with the police saying that they had paid bribes. The Institute accommodates data management and capacity-building activities for the Afrobarometer network.
