The vast majority of Bushmen have been forced off the land they traditionally occupied; dispossessed and marginalised, Bushmen are battling to survive in the modern world. For more than 25 years, Paul Weinberg has visited Bushman communities in three different Southern African countries to record the reality of their lives today, against the romantic mythology perpetuated in popular films and glossy picture books. Weinberg has published three books (Shaken roots, 1989; In search of the San, 1999 and Once we were hunters, 2000). These photographs have been exhibited in Holland, Botswana, Namibia, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Germany, Italy, Norway and Australia, as well as South Africa. This unique collection of images has been digitised and is now available for research and scholarship through the University’s Libraries and will soon be available on the website of the Visual Archive at the Manuscripts and Archives Library.
