African Gumbo Lecture 2024
In this paper, the inquiry revolves around the decolonization of African national anthems. Extracted from his ongoing reflections, the focus shifts from decolonial critique to practice/praxis. Associate Professor Fuh's attention is drawn to the intricate and enduring grip of coloniality, particularly evident in its deep entrenchment within the fabric of liberation heritage like songs. Prioritizing extraversion and the quest for conceptual frameworks that elucidate African experiences as supportive structures, several examples are utilized to illustrate the inherent contradictions and inconsistencies between discourses of liberation, independence, and the extraverted essence of patriotic songs. The M̀BÀN of the Bafut people is presented as a potential alternative framework for understanding patriotic songs.
