The UCT Symphonic Wind Ensemble, comprising about 45 undergraduate and postgraduate students, performs their first concert of 2025. The concert opens fittingly with Alfred Reed’s Curtains Up! A theatre overture for winds, followed by excerpts from Elgar’s Enigma Variations, dedicated to Sean Kierman. The programme concludes with Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue arranged for symphonic wind ensemble with piano soloist Isaac van der Merwe. The Ensemble is conducted by Brandon Phillips, Head of Woodwind and Ensembles at UCT.
