UCT Psychology Department Receives Prestigious Grant to Study Teen Sleep and Mental Health
The Wellcome Trust has awarded researchers from the UCT Departments of Psychology and Human Biology a five-year multisite research grant to study sleep and circadian health in adolescents. The Sleep CHAMPzzz Study: Sleep and Circadian Health in Adolescents – a Mental-health Participation Study is led by Associate Professor Gosia Lipinska of the University of Cape Town's Psychology Department, with key involvement from Associate Professor Dale Rae from Human Biology. The study is a longitudinal multi-site investigation that seeks to identify the sleep- and circadian-related mechanisms through which adolescents may either develop or exhibit resilience to depression and anxiety. The study also examines disparities in the trajectory from sleep- and circadian-related changes to depression and anxiety during adolescence across low, medium, and high socioeconomic communities in the United Kingdom (UK) and South Africa (SA). By following a cohort of adolescents over time and monitoring their sleep patterns and mental health outcomes, the study aims to establish causal connections between sleep and circadian biology, depression, and anxiety. These findings will shed light on how (focusing on specific factors) and when (during development) to intervene effectively to both preventing and provide early treatment for adolescent depression and anxiety.
