Portfolio Development Workshop 2026

A preparatory program for historically disadvantaged applicants who wish to study Fine Art at UCT

This workshop, offered by the Creative Social Ethics program in collaboration with the UCT Michaelis School of Fine Art, is designed to enhance applicants' technical and conceptual skills to better prepare them for university studies. Classes will be held in person at the Michaelis School of Fine Art (UCT Hiddingh Campus, 31-37 Orange Street, Cape Town) Tuesdays and Thursdays from February 10 through June 11, 2026. Participants will have access to the school's facilities and resources, and all materials for assignments and projects will be provided.

The objective of this program is to help participants prepare and submit a compelling application for admission to UCT at the conclusion of the workshop. Please note, participation in the program does not guarantee admission to UCT, but it will equip participants with the skills necessary to complete the application and portfolio required for admission.

The core component of the workshop will focus on technical and conceptual development across a variety of creative media, including drawing, sculpture, and mixed media, with an emphasis on exploring themes of self, family, community, and the environment. The latter part of the program will be largely self-directed, focusing on individual portfolio development. Studio work will be complemented by theoretical foundations through readings, lectures, and class discussions, as well as exercises designed to help participants articulate their creative practice in writing.

This program is fully funded by an external donor with support from the Michaelis School of Fine Art. There is no cost to participants.
