What is the duration of the BA (Fine Art) degree?

The BAFA (Bachelor of Arts in Fine Arts) degree is a four-year degree?

 

Why do I need to submit a portfolio?

Through the submission of the four drawings you are demonstrating to the portfolio committee that you have developed the skills
required to draw accurately from life. We are looking for an indication that you have the capacity to work with the traditional elements of image creation - composition, proportion, perspective, line, mark, tone and shape. In addition, the further submissions of your choice provide you with an opportunity to show your creative thinking, observational skills and experimentation.

 

Why do I need to apply online if I am submitting my portfolio to the Michaelis department?

It is important to apply online so that the Faculty of Humanities can evaluate whether you meet the minimum requirements in order to apply for the degree. Your online application also serves as a way for all relevant departments to track your information and check your matric results and NBT scores.

 

What are the portfolio requirements?

Applicants must submit the following items combined in a single PDF file, and not exceeding 20MB file size:

  1. 4 original drawings: Self portrait, Still life, Figure or animal study, Architectural or landscape study (submitted digitally)
  2. A portfolio of 10 recent works (submitted digitally)
  3. A statement of motivation or 250-500 words (submitted digitally) – This is completed as part of the BAFA FORM which can be found in the downloads section.

 

What is an NBT test?

The NBT, which stands for the National Benchmark test is a compulsory test written by all applicants to any tertiary institution.
